TRIX KUIJPER
Artist Statement
I work primarily from my imagination. I combine soft organic forms, such as flowers and faces, with hard angular inorganic shapes of metal and stone. I like to explore the duality of the natural world - its fragility and vulnerability contrasted with its power and occasionally its savagery.
I am fascinated by everyday objects and mechanisms, such as clocks and watches, dolls, umbrellas and musical instruments. I paint and sculpt them in unusual and, sometimes, impossible settings creating an alternative world of immense possibilities.
A lot of my work draws on unresolved feelings, some sad, some joyful. The pieces have different meanings for me depending on my outlook on any given day. I see no reason to impose these meanings on others. Instead, I want the viewer to provide explanations for my paintings, based on their individual life experiences.
